The present State of the high roads in, and belonging to the Parish of Ludgvan, April 11 1771
1.....The Road from Marazion bridge, to the Western Gobles, being a mile long, laid out with great expence and difficulty, is growing too flat, and much narrowed in many places, by encroachment of the Sand-banks ; this is the most used of all the ways in the parish ; more passengers, horses, & carriages travelling here in a week, than on any other in three months ~ ~ To finish, and keep this in proper repair might be the first, and principal care of the Waywardens -. N:B: It wants more stuff in the middle, and should be well cleared on each side, and may be done first
2)....Treasso-lane has been so washed by the last winter's floods, that tis now rocky, ruinous, and dangerous for the market-people, and if not repaired soon will be impassable . . . this, if the Justices think proper, might be enjoin'd to be done in the second place...
3)....Chivelin-bridge is too narrow, and as the Parish was last year threatned to be presented for it (tho one half belongs to the town of Marazion) the Waywardens began to widen it in the winter, but were prevented by the weather - - This, with the way to Trewall Mill, adjoining to Chivelin, might be attended to, in the third place.
4).....The Ganders, adjoining to the Parish Alms-house, leading to Crowliss river, is a narrow, crooked, hollow Way, the land, on each side, in some places more than eight feet higher than the Road, and so narrow that if two carriages meet they can neither go forward, or backward, but with hazard, & difficulty ; This Way in conformity to the Law should be widened ten feet, but can not be made safe without taking down three feet of the Land on each side. this ought to be the fourth care of the Waywardens .. ..
The other Defects in the Parish roads are more plain, and easy to be repaired. and as neither of the present Waywardens have ever served the Office before, and may not know where to begin, or end, or how to proceed,
It will be very good in the Justices of the Peace, to chalk out, and fix such a Plan for them, as they may guide themselves best by, for the more effectual forming, and repairing the Roads of the said Parish of Ludgvan . . . .
Humbly submitted to the worshipful and Revd: Dr: Borlase, & Mr Penneck Vicar of Gulval two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Western Division
